The musical journey
A life devoted
to voice and tradition.
Protopsaltes, Byzantine music teacher, and choir director. Petros G. Nikitas serves a musical heritage that continues to find its expression in the present.

Beginnings in Serres
Born and based in Serres, Petros G. Nikitas began his musical education at a young age. Studies in both European and Byzantine music gradually shaped an identity that brings theoretical knowledge into close contact with ecclesiastical and traditional musical expression.
A foundation in musical knowledge
His advanced studies in European music led to qualifications in Harmony, Counterpoint, Fugue, and Composition. He also studied at the “Saint Nikitas the New” School of Byzantine Music of the Holy Metropolis of Serres and Nigrita, receiving a Diploma in the Teaching of Byzantine Music.
Learning the psaltic tradition
His long apprenticeship with Ioannis Papachronis and Lazaros Tsormpatzidis was central to his development. Through these teachers, he deepened his understanding of the style, interpretation, and ethos of the Patriarchal and ecclesiastical psaltic tradition. Today, he serves as protopsaltes at Saint Nikitas Church in Serres.
Teaching the next generation
As a Byzantine music teacher, he has worked with recognised Byzantine music schools and conservatories in Greece. His teaching combines theoretical study and practical knowledge with the distinctive character of ecclesiastical musical expression. Online lessons extend that connection to people beyond his home city.

As artistic director of a Byzantine and traditional choir of more than 25 members, he cultivates a repertoire connecting psaltic music with Greek traditional song. Invitations have taken him to ecclesiastical and cultural events in Greece and abroad, including Jerusalem and Marseille.
Radio, recordings, and the work ahead
For 15 consecutive years, he produced and presented “Psaltirion Terpnon” on Kivotos 99.2 FM, the radio station of the Holy Metropolis of Serres and Nigrita. Guests included Lykourgos Angelopoulos and Chronis Aidonidis. His discography comprises four Byzantine music CDs. His future creative aims include writing and publishing books to support the study and teaching of psaltic art.
